Southland Jubilee children’s area to feature two new activities.

Greensboro, Ga.-Better Hometown Greensboro is pleased to announce two new fun activities to be found in the children’s area at Southland Jubilee on April 16.

Stan Talifero, head coach of the UGA table tennis team and previously trained at the United States Olympic Training Center in 2001 and 2003, will give free table tennis demonstrations during the festival

“I would like to establish an interest in table tennis in Greene County,” Talifero said. “I made the two tennis tables used in the Greene County recreation center and hope to start a table tennis program at the center.”

While children line up to get a shot at table tennis, others will have a chance to get a snapshot of themselves at the Associated Photographers of Lake Oconee’s photo booth.

The club is excited to share their photography skills at Southland Jubilee as they will offer free pictures of children ages 12 and younger.

“We will set up a portable photo studio, take portraits of children, load the digital pictures on a CD and give it to the parents,” said Rick Spors, treasurer of the Associated Photographers of Lake Oconee. “Parents will be able to economically print however many copies and sizes they want at any of the local photography facilities.”

As always, parents and children can expect the classic festival moonwalk, rock climbing wall, trackless train ride and face painting among other favorites.

Festival Hall to feature student art contest at Southland Jubilee.

Greensboro, Ga.-Every year Better Hometown seeks to improve the Southland Jubilee experience of all participants through new and exciting aspects of the festival.

This year is no different as Festival Hall will join the fun-filled day to host an art contest held between Greene County students.

“I’m really excited for the art contest,” Southland Jubilee Intern Emily McCurley said. “I think this will be a great way to get students expressing their creativity and also feeling more a part of Southland Jubilee.”

The theme for the art contest “What I Love About Jubilee” allows students to be as realistic or abstract as they wish in depicting what they love most about Southland Jubilee.

The possibilities for artwork are endless between vendors, cars, animals, foods, bands and everything else offered at the festival.

Art classes in the schools will participate and have until April 8 to complete their art pieces before they are judged by the Greensboro Art Alliance.

“I can’t wait to see what the students come up with,” said McCurley. “The unique perspectives of each student will make for a beautiful display in Festival Hall.”

The art will be available for viewing at Festival Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 16 during Southland Jubilee.

Georgia Classic Cruisers rev up for another year at Southland Jubilee.

Greensboro, Ga.-Georgia Classic Cruisers invites all car enthusiasts to check out a variety of hot rods, modern, classics, antiques and trucks on April 16 at the thirteenth annual Southland Jubilee.

The car show will be located on S. Main St. and will feature 150 top-notch specialty vehicles from Atlanta, Augusta and surrounding areas.

“This will be the thirteenth year for the Georgia Classic Cruisers (GCC) association to partner with Better Hometown in doing the car show as part of Southland Jubilee,” said Ron Hazzard, president of Georgia Classic Cruisers. “In doing the car show at Southland Jubilee, GCC is able to interact with other car enthusiasts that bring their cars to the show, as well as talk to spectators about their car interests.”

There will be an abundance of 60’s and 70’s “muscle cars” including GTOs, Corvettes, Chevelles, and Camaros. Ford Mustangs and Chrysler products including Barracudas, Belvederes and Road Runners can also be expected.

The cars will not only be on display for the enjoyment of Southland Jubilee visitors, but will compete amongst each other.

Professional, independent judges will look at year, originality, best engine, best paint and top 50 cars in addition to many other categories in judging the vehicles. Winners will be announced and awarded in the afternoon.

As viewers move through each car they will enjoy upbeat music chosen by Tommy Landrum, the car show disc jockey.

“In coming to the Jubilee car show, participants and spectators alike are able to appreciate what the car owners have been able to accomplish in restoring older vehicles and possibly encourage them to get involved with a car project of their own,” Hazzard said.  “For others, it just brings back memories of when they were young and may have driven a car similar to those in the show.”

Georgia Classic Cruisers has a close relationship with Southland Jubilee, but also maintains an active philanthropic presence  within the Greene County community as the group donated a total of $1400 from Oct. 2010 though Jan. 2011to five charities including Greene County Food Pantry, Second Harvest, Greene County Stocking Fund, First Call Pregnancy Center and Project Linus.

Those interested in participating in the car show must pay a $20 entrance fee and can contact Ron Hazzard with Georgia Classic Cruisers at (706-467-9306).

Volunteers are invited to assist with Greensboro’s Southland Jubilee festival

Greensboro, Ga.-  In no time at the hay bales will be stacked, vendors will pitch their tents and classic cars will line Main Street of Downtown Greensboro.

The familiar sights and smells of the Southland Jubilee will welcome all visitors on April 16 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. However, before animals can be petted and unique art be purchased, Downtown Development asks community members to participate in the first Steering Committee meeting on Friday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. in the Greensboro City Hall.

“The Jubilee Steering Committee is made up of volunteers who lend their time and expertise to help plan and prepare for the festival,” explains Greensboro Better Hometown Director Cail Hammons.

The meeting will focus on the goals of Jubilee as the planning committee begins ironing out details for the annual festival. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in the Steering Committee meeting to help circulate new ideas and give input towards another successful year.

Southland Jubilee has been downtown Greensboro’s premier event for the last 13 years.  Over the years, the annual spring time event had developed a reputation across the region as a quality heritage arts and family festival. The festival brings thousands of people to the historic commercial district and remains a key tool in Greensboro’s downtown revitalization toolbox.

“Greene County can be proud of Southland Jubilee’s success over the years, especially given that the festival represents such a large volunteer driven effort for our community,” Hammons said.

For more information about serving on the Southland Jubilee Steering Committee please contact Cail Hammons at the Greensboro Better Hometown Office at (706) 453-7674.
